Sauble Beach
Sauble Beach is a world class Blue Flag beach and voted one of the best beaches in Canada. It’s located on the west coast of the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. Sauble Beach is the world’s second largest fresh water beach stretching some seven miles along the pristine blue waters of Lake Huron. It has long been a tourist destination but in the last few years become a Mecca for kiteboarders for one simple reason. Sauble Beach is the windiest place in Ontario from early May to late October. In the spring and fall we usually ride cold fronts from the NW. In the summer light afternoon thermal winds from the SW are common requiring big kites for light wind riding. The occasional summer thunder storm from the west produces some amazing swell for wave riding, especially at the mouth of the Sauble river. This location is not recommended for beginners but an ideal location for intermediate to expert riders.
Public washrooms located in the pavillon at the 6th Street and Lakeshore Rd. There are no lifeguards and paid parking is enforced during the busy summer months only. Beach access points thru the sand dunes are clearly marked and the environment should be respected at all times. Please note Piping Plovers usually nest in North Sauble Beach in spring and are usually gone by June. This area is usually marked and patrolled by local volunteers.
In summary, spring and fall are the best times to ride Sauble Beach. Times to avoid are July and August when it’s busy with swimmers & the beach gets crowded during the day.

Oliphant (North & South)
North Oliphant is actually known as Sandy Bay Cove. It is the farthest bay north in the Oliphant Fishing Islands. There are two access points. First is on the beach at the end of Spry Lake Rd. in front of Sandy Bay Cove Restaurant. Local kiteboarders are currently working on a plan with the town to preserve kite access at this site. It will likely involve a designated no kite zone directly in front of the restaurant. The second access point is further down with beach access from Merry St. This area is pristine and clean with very shallow water and an expansive beach due to the low water levels of the great lakes. The water is flat to choppy and is ideal for beginners to experts. For this reason many of the local kite schools use this beach.
The bay is large enough to accommodate fifty plus kiters and gets quite busy on long weekends in the summer. Kiters are asked to respect all signage and use only designated parking areas and avoid driving on the beach. The local environment group called the Friends of Oliphant Coastal Environments (http://fooce.org/) is working alongside the local kiters and other beach users in an effort to preserve the natural ecosystem.
South Oliphant is a few kilometers south along picturesque Shoreline drive. Public washrooms are located next to the private marina in front of the famous old Oliphant dance pavillion. Public parking is in front of the washrooms and a short walk out to the beach you’ll see the kite launch area. This small bay located at the end of Mary St. between Lonely Island & Whiskey Island holds 20 or so kiters and works best on a SW wind. Shallow water and a sandy bottom make it ideal for the beginner to expert kiteboarder. In the summer time it gets busy with local cottagers and kiters are asked to respect designated swim areas. There are several camping resorts in Oliphant including Fiddlehead, Trillium and White Sands. If there’s no wind you can take a boat tour and snorkel over shipwrecks in the crystal clear waters. The old shipping port town of Wiarton is a short drive across the peninsula on the Georgian Bay side and offers all the amenities of a modern city. Sit back and enjoy what the Bruce Pennisula has to offer.
